DIR Floortime – A Therapy Approach Used for Young Children

What is DIR Floortime?

Developmental, Individual-difference, Relationship-based Floortime (or DIR Floortime) is a therapeutic approach that focuses on supporting children with developmental challenges, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

It was developed by Dr Stanley Greenspan and is based on the idea that children with developmental challenges can make significant progress if they receive a tailored and individualised approach to learning and therapy.

The DIR Floortime approach emphasises the importance of building a strong and positive relationship between the child and caregiver as the foundation for supporting the child's development.

This is done through a series of interactive activities, known as ‘floortime’, that are designed to engage the child's interests and challenge them to reach their full potential.

What does DIR Floortime involve?

During floortime, the therapist or caregiver follows the child's lead and helps the child explore and interact with their environment in a meaningful and engaging way.

The therapist or caregiver also helps the child develop new skills and abilities by introducing new challenges and opportunities for learning.

Examples of the process include:

  • The therapist/caregiver follows the child's lead and helps the child explore and interact with their environment in a meaningful and engaging way. This may involve playing with toys, exploring the environment, and engaging in activities that the child enjoys.

  • As the child becomes more comfortable and engaged, new challenges and opportunities for learning can be introduced. This can involve toys, activities, materials, or challenging the child to solve problems or complete tasks.

  • As the child engages in floortime activities, the therapist/caregiver observes and supports the child's development, providing guidance and encouragement as needed.

Having 3-4 ‘floortime’ sessions per week gives the child an opportunity to practice new skills. Your child can also be involved in additional therapies such as speech therapy or occupational therapy.

So, how can DIR Floortime benefit my child?

Evidence suggests that the DIR Floortime approach may be beneficial for children with developmental challenges, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Some potential benefits of DIR Floortime may include:

Supporting the development of social and emotional skills

DIR Floortime emphasises the importance of building a strong and positive relationship between the child and caregiver as the foundation for supporting the child's development.

By engaging the child in interactive activities that are meaningful and engaging for the child, DIR Floortime may help children develop their social and emotional skills.

Improving communication and language skills

DIR Floortime may help children with ASD and other developmental challenges improve their communication and language skills.

By following the child's lead and using simple language and gestures to communicate, caregivers can help children develop their understanding of language and their ability to use it to express themselves.

Enhancing cognitive development

The interactive activities of DIR Floortime may also help children with developmental challenges develop their cognitive skills, such as problem-solving, reasoning, and abstract thinking.

Improving overall functioning

Children who receive DIR Floortime may show improvements in their overall functioning, including their ability to interact with others, communicate, and learn new skills.
