Assessment Process at All About Kids

What to Expect from the Assessment Process

When it comes to understanding your child’s emotional, behavioural, or learning needs, a psychological assessment can offer valuable insights and open the door to the right support. At All About Kids, we know that the process can feel overwhelming at first—which is why we take the time to walk families through every step, beginning with a clear conversation around expectations, pricing, and process.

Let’s Get on the Same Page—From the Start

Before any assessment begins, we start with an initial consultation where one of our psychologists or specialist therapists meets with you to explore your concerns. This is also the point where we talk through assessment options, fees, and what you can expect moving forward. That way, both you and the clinician can move forward with a shared understanding and confidence in the next steps.

The 6-Step Assessment Journey

Here’s how our process works, step by step:

Step 1: Booking and Consent

The journey begins when you make an enquiry through our online booking system. One of our friendly team members will then get in touch to arrange your child’s assessment and provide consent forms to be completed prior to the appointment.

Step 2: Initial Consultation

In this screening interview, parents will meet with a psychologist or specialist therapist to discuss their child’s development, behaviours, learning, or emotional needs. This conversation helps determine whether an assessment is appropriate, and if so, what type would be most helpful. This is also where we’ll discuss assessment fees and ensure you understand the scope of the process.

 Step 3: In-Clinic Assessment

Next, your child will come into the clinic for a formal assessment. This involves a variety of standardised tools tailored to your child’s individual needs. Most assessments take between 2–6 hours, though we’ll always pace things to suit your child’s comfort and focus levels.

Step 4: Social-Emotional and Behavioural Functioning

Beyond the in-clinic sessions, we gather additional information through questionnaires and observations. These may be completed by parents, teachers, and sometimes the child, depending on their age and needs. This helps us build a well-rounded understanding of your child in different settings.

Step 5: Comprehensive Report & Recommendations

All data—from test scores to interviews and questionnaires—is compiled into a detailed report. This report outlines your child’s strengths, areas of need, and includes practical recommendations for school accommodations, learning support, and home strategies.

Step 6: Feedback Session

Finally, we invite parents back for a feedback session with the psychologist or specialist therapist. Here, we walk through the report, explain our findings in plain language, and ensure you feel confident in the next steps. It’s also a space to ask questions and receive tailored guidance.

Clear, Caring, and Collaborative

We believe that transparency and collaboration are key to a positive assessment experience. That’s why we take the time to discuss expectations—both clinical and financial—upfront, ensuring that families feel supported and informed at every stage.
