A little bit of History

The NDIS is Australia’s first national scheme for people with disability. It replaces previous support schemes including Better Start and Helping Children with Autism Packages and moves away from providing block funding to agencies and community organisations. This means that each eligible person with a disability applies for and receives funding directly. The funding is allocated for specific purposes such as therapy and resources so that participants are able to progress towards meeting their own developmental and living goals. Young children, under 6 years are eligible for support if they have developmental delays even if they do not have an identified disability. This provides early intervention and aims to reduce the need for therapy support later. The great thing about NDIS funding is that it provides participants with more choice and control over what, how, when and where their supports are provided. It also provides certainty that they will receive the support they need for as long as they need it over their lifetime.
